Biography

James D. (“Jim”)  Skaar was born and raised in Geneva, and continues to live and practice law in his hometown.  He graduated from Geneva High School in 1972, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice with a minor in political science from the University of Wisconsin - Platteville in 1975.   After spending about three years as a police officer, Jim decided to attend law school, and graduated from the John Marshall Law School in Chicago  “with Distinction” in 1981.

Jim has engaged in the practice of law primarily in Kane County, Illinois since 1981, first as an associate with Ruddy, Myler, Ruddy & Fabian in Aurora (1981 - 1986), and later as a partner in Smith, Landmeier, Skaar & Elders in Geneva (1986 - 2004).  Jim opened “the Law Office of James D. Skaar”  in January, 2005, and concentrates primarily in general civil and trial practice, estate planning, business law and litigation, and other types of law (see “Areas of Practice” page).  He is “A” rated by the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory.

Jim is licensed to practice in the United States Supreme Court, the Illinois Supreme Court, and all of the local Courts.  He is a member of the Trial Bar of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, and is also licensed to practice in the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.  He has been a member of the Illinois and American Trial Lawyers Association, and is a past Chairman of the Board of CASA Kane County, a volunteer organization that represents abused and neglected children in Kane County.

Jim lives in Geneva with his wife, Mary, and daughter, Laura.
